Hunting & Fishing

Many of our tanning and taxidermy students take advantage of the excellent hunting and fishing opportunities we have here close to the school. Spring hunting includes black bear, coyote and turkey as well as bass, trout and salmon fishing. During summer you can fish in many of the rivers, creeks, and lakes close to the school. Fall and Winter brings hunting for whitetail deer, mule deer, elk, turkey, black bear, mountain lion, bobcat, coyote, upland birds such as ruffed grouse, blue grouse, spruce grouse, pheasant, quail, and chuckar, as well as fishing for bass, trout and steelhead.

Now is the time to learn the taxidermy or tanning trade!

Taxidermy is growing at a very fast rate throughout the country. Within the taxidermy industry their are many opportunities waiting to be taken advantage of. All over this country there are towns and cities without a taxidermist. The demand for taxidermy is becoming higher and higher, as tags and permits for true trophy animals are becoming more expensive and harder to get a hold of.

Here at North Idaho School of Tanning & Taxidermy we deliver more information to our students than other schools. When you pay good money to learn this trade, you expect to be given the knowledge needed to be successful. Many other schools short you on the important knowledge you need. They'll show you how to put a mount together but they won't teach you about tanning, sculpting, molding, form making, or habitat design. They also leave out the essential business aspects of tanning and taxidermy, as well as customer relations. We do not leave out the important stuff.

In the tanning industry the trend becoming evident is smaller tanneries, with less employees. They are able to produce a better quality tan than those larger tanneries that get hides out quickly with their poor quality tan, holes, shaved thin spots, etc. Also the ever rising price of shipping is causing taxidermists to seek out tanneries within driving distance, actually creating a new market within the tanning industry.

Our tanning courses are excellent for those wanting to learn the trade. We have owned and operated a full time tannery for several years and the methods we teach have been proven over those years by satisfied customers around the nation. We have streamlined our process using the newest tanning agents, and products available today, and don't use any of those "too good to be true" shortcuts. Our course is much more than following a tanning recipe, we teach you much more than that, you will truly understand the "how's and why's" of the tanning process.

There is money to be made in the taxidermy and tanning industry that people aren't taking advantage of. We can show you how.

We teach you all that, as well as eBay sales, advertising, professionally photographing your mounts, and how to attract the top clients. In addition our taxidermy course is a full eight weeks, ensuring enough time for the student to get a good grasp on the information we are teaching. Other schools with a shorter course length cannot fit all the necessary information into such a limited time frame.

SOMETHING NOT OFFERED ANYWHERE ELSE!

As a class project we will provide and mount one African piece. At the end of the class there is a drawing to see which student gets to take the mount home!

Each Student will Mount:

3 Birds
4 Fish
3 Game heads
2 Life-size
1 Rug (Which We Provide!)
2 Horn Plaques
1 Skull

Students are encouraged to bring more specimens as we will mount as many as time permits.

Van, the owner and instructor is a skilled taxidermist and teacher. The only break he took from full time taxidermy was a short period where he developed a training program for a Fortune 500 company. He was certified to teach a "train the trainers" course which educated teachers how to identify the different ways people learn. This ensures that each student in a class better understands what is being taught, guaranteeing that the learning environment is the absolute best it can be for each student. So, keep in mind that just because someone is a blue ribbon winning taxidermist it does not mean they have the knowledge it takes to teach. That is another skill on it's own.
